hurumanu- Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels

aim: To learn about the impact of fossil fuels on our environment

The first thing we looked at was mining fossil fuels, the questions we had to answer:

What Fossil Fuels are mined?
  1. Oil
  2. Coal
  3. Natural Gas

Mr Palmer gave us a cookie, we had to draw a picture of that cookie in our hurumanu books, we also had to draw a habitat around the cookie. For example my cookies habitat was underwater so I drew, sea weed, water, fish, and other sea creatures. After this activity we had to answer these questions.

What type of habitat is it?:
an underwater habitat.

What plants and animals live there:

Fish,crabs, sharks, seaweed and dolphins.

How do humans use your habitat?:

usually to swim or fish for food, and most of the time mine oil.

Mining the cookie:

When we had done drawing our habitat and cookie we had to try and mine out all the chocolate chips with a toothpick with out making the cookie break. My cookie did sadly break but I managed to get about 16 chocolate chips out.

After this we had to answer some more questions.

How has your habitat (cookie) changed?:
There is nothing left in the cookie and it has also crumbled.

How can we avoid this in the future?:
By starting from the middle part of the cookie.

What lives there now?:
Nothing.

Materials:
  1. Plastic plate
  2. Chocolate Chip Cookie
  3. A Toothpick

Steps:
  1. Get a Plastic Plate and put the Cookie in the middle
  2. take a  book.
  3. Draw two drawings
    1. Draw a picture of the cookie.
    2. Draw a picture of the habitat.
  4. With a toothpick, dig the chocolate chip.
  5. After digging the cookie, count how many chocolate chips you have.
  6. Draw the cookie after being dug up
  7. Eat the cookie

Conclusion:

I think this experiment is a good representation of how things like coal mining, and oil mining are ruining our environment, and also showing people how important it is to respect the earth just like how we were mining but also trying not to break our cookie. Even though some did.

I think the environment will defiantly get better if all of us try.
